The index is a reading of manufacturer datasheets and cross-reference charts. It is not a promise that a cell will run your device for a stated number of hours, and it is not a substitute for the device manufacturer's service manual. Ratings depend on load, temperature and cutoff. Two honest datasheets often disagree.

Match the code printed on the old cell when you can. A code that shares an outline can still be the wrong chemistry. Coin lithium cells are dangerous if swallowed. Energizer's coin datasheets warn that a swallowed cell can cause serious injury or death in as little as two hours. Keep the cells away from children, and use a holder that needs a tool or two motions to open.
