3 V · 20 × 1.6 mm · Lithium manganese dioxide coin

CR2016 is the 20.0 × 1.6 mm lithium coin, nominal 3.0 V. Energizer rates 100 mAh to 2.0 V on 30 kΩ at 21°C (ANSI/NEDA-5000LC, IEC-CR2016). Panasonic rates 90 mAh. It is the cell you find in thinner cards and some older fobs. It is not a flattened CR2032 you can pad out.

Can I substitute it?

Same rule as the other 20 mm coins. Match 1.6 mm height. CR2025 and CR2032 are thicker.

Lay the old cell on the outline. This shows the top outline (diameter) and the side outline (height) at 1:1 once the screen is calibrated.

These are not one test repeated. Capacity varies by brand, load, temperature and cutoff.

Lithium manganese dioxide coin cells

A CR coin is a lithium/manganese dioxide primary cell. Panasonic's industrial catalog shows how the number is built: C is that chemistry, R means round, the next two digits are the diameter in millimetres, and the last two are the height in tenths of a millimetre. CR2032 is a 20 mm cell, 3.2 mm thick. CR2025 is the same diameter and 2.5 mm thick. CR2016 is 1.6 mm thick. The voltage does not change with the thickness. Energizer's CR2032 and CR2025 sheets both print a nominal 3.0 V, and Panasonic's standard CR line does too. What changes is how much lithium fits in the can, and whether the cell can reach the contact spring.

That is the whole of the CR2032-versus-CR2025 question. A 2025 will sit in a 2032 holder and rattle. The spring may still touch it on the bench and then drop out in a pocket. A 2032 will not go into a holder machined for 2.5 mm. Do not stack two thinner cells to fake the thickness, and do not add a shim of foil. Match the height printed on the dead cell.

Capacity is a test result, not a property of the four-digit code. Energizer rates its CR2032 at 235 mAh to 2.0 V on a 15 kΩ load at 21°C. Panasonic rates its CR2032 at 225 mAh. Those are both real, and they are not interchangeable as a single 'typical' figure. The page for each size lists the brand ratings we could read off a datasheet. Where a brand is missing, that brand has not been assigned a number here.

Energizer's coin sheets also carry a swallow warning. A lithium coin lodged in the oesophagus can burn through tissue in about two hours. Holders should need a tool, or two deliberate motions, to open. That is a design requirement on the datasheet, not a slogan.
